Added: I really should put a little disclaimer here, so, I will. The ideas expressed here are my own, and do not nessecarily reflect those of the Gnostic community as a whole, nor those who identify themselves as a Witch. What you find here are musings on MY understanding and experience as, what I understand to be, a Gnostic Witch.
I am a Gnostic Witch. Bet your bottom there are people out there who feel this is completely incompatible. I mean, the Gnostics are dualists. They hate the Earth and the physical plain, and a witch relishes in and worship it, right? I don’t know how many times I’ve heard this.
The problem is that Gnostics are not dualist. They simply see the worldly plain as a limited manifestation of being or existance. Being a Witch aids one in cutting through the physical and connecting with The Divine. So, for me the two paths fit perfectly together.
Now I’m going to make it even more complicated. ![]()
Gnostics believe that everyone and everything are part of the Pleroma, or ‘The Fullness’; God. Here is a quote from the following website: http://www.gnostic-church.org/misperceptions.htm (an interesting read for anyone interested in learning about gnosticism)
The picture above is Athena, in whom the ancient Greeks recognized the manifestation of the divine feminine in all forms of Wisdom. We see in Athena one of the many aspects of Sophia.
Ultimately, every God/Goddess in any pantheon can be seen as an aspect of The Divine. And each and every God/Goddess is going to have something unique to offer to help with your goal of gnosis.
This is all so simplistic, but it is a base for me to work with, here.
Are we having fun yet?

Thanks for the posting. Keep up the good work.
There are those who contend that magic is opposed to divinity. It is interesting that in the history of the conflict between the Church and magicians, those who performed magic in the name of the Church were considered “miracle workers.” Those who performed magic in the name of divinity were attacked as being a threat to the Church.

There is, most definitely, much hypocracy in history pertaining to ‘magic’ and the Church. In fact, even today, most Christians will NOT consider prayer to be ‘magic’, but, IMO, in it’s most basic form, it certainly is.
Thanks for your response!

Isn’t there a conflict between Witchcraft and Gnosticism? Witchcraft worships the Earth. Doesn’t Gnosticism reject the Earth as evil?
“I understand Witchcraft to be a way of seeing and negotiating with the forces of the world in a way that’s entirely Gnostic. Certainly Wicca was engineered deliberately at the outset as a means to popularize the Gnostic Mass. I see the Earth worship of The Witchcraft to not be about the earth per se as the genius in it – the genus loci – , which we mythologize as the Spark of Sophia hidden everywhere, in every corner and aspect of the created world.
Gnosticism is not about the rejection of the earth, but a rejection of the systems that are placed upon it. Even then, it doesn’t dismiss that system as necessarily evil, just that it can’t tell you who you are. The accusation that Gnostics are dualists is a slander. As I’ve written before, Gnostic scripture employs natural metaphors constantly in a very positive way; storms, newborn babies, flowers, streams, the cycles of crops. We also see the Hermetic tradition abiding within Witchcraft and Gnosticism equally, so for me there’s no conflict.”

hey…
nice site.
i think you’re definitely right that gnosticism is a difficult to grasp. but i think you’re doing fairly well with it all. it takes a pretty intelligent person to even get to the point of looking into Gnosticism…let alone try and decifer it.
i definitely understand your feeling of being a Gnostic Witch. it does make sense to me…although when you go more indepth into the levels…everything gradually becomes clearer.
i don’t agree that Gnostics hate the Earth. we don’t incarnate on only this planet. there are many…but this planet is the worst and the most difficult. over 70% of this world contains dark or grey entities…which has a great deal to do with the fact that some gnostics see this world as hell. compared to the other side….it is. death is not punishment. death is the reward for living this life for God. the only reason this world is so difficult to live in…is that we are more emotional than any other beings in the universe. this world is not evil….there are just many evil entities living here. but that is why we are also the most developed… to even get an oppertunity to incarnate on this planet means that we are already highly evolved. most entities come here for their last lives…in order to evolve as much as they possibly can. we chose to live in this world…we created our own lives. we knew it wouldn’t be easy…but it doesn’t mean we should dislike the world or hate it.
i’m a gnostic…. i practically live outside. i’m an herbalist and a shaman. my love of the world and of the people on this world does not go against my belief in gnosis. it never has and never will. i don’t consider myself a witch though… if that is the only way at this moment that you can make sense of what you believe…i think that you should continue with this. but the deeper to go into gnosticism…it will all unravel. i promise. and the funny thing is… it is so simple…in this completely amazing way. it makes sense…and it feels right. you will know. you already do…you just have to trust yourself. i would consider however…trying to contact your spirit guides. they can answer any questions you have…and can help you truly see how it all works and connects. they have helped me…a great deal. Sylvia Brown is the most famous Gnostic in the world…i think it would definitely be worth it to reada few of her books.
and you’re already quite intelligent…more so than most. and i can understand where you have recieved conflicting ideas within gnosticism. just follow your own truth…no one elses. that is the point…of it all. to find your own truth and discard the rest.
if you ever want to have a chat about Gnosticism…i’d definitely be happy do do so.
peace.
